Fifty-Seventh Keychain - [Voice/Action]

1,095 days. Maybe I should stop counting, but I can't stop. It's weird...it's like nothing's changed, but everything has. In the last three years, I've seen my best friends come and go, I've seen Sora come and go, and I've met someone who looks just like me and a psychopath who kept hurting my friends. But in the last three years, Axel's still as goofy as ever, Xion's learning just as much as I am, and the two of them have stuck with me even with all of my strange thoughts and patterns. I guess that's really what friendship is.

It took three or four tries, but I think I finally understand Sora. I'm still not sure what it all means to me, but I can at least say I feel better about things.

I guess...I've grown. We all have. But what happens after that? Do we all keep growing, or are we going to run out of places to grow? Maybe I'll have an answer to that next year.

...what's the longest amount of time any of you ever thought you'd be here? And were you guys disappointed when that amount of time passed? [Not if. When.] Not to scare the New Feathers or anything, but I know a lot of you out there have been here for a while.

Maybe I should say welcome to the new people anyway. I'm Roxas. I'm not sure how I can, but let me know if I can help somehow.

...oh,Axel and Xion? I know you guys are probably busy but I've got something for you. You know where to find me...and anyway I have something to ask you two. [On the roof, specifically.]

Well...if it's my birthday, that means it's half yours, right?

You mean the day you were... [created, but Sora's trailed off on that thought, looking reminiscent. almost like he wants to be apologetic, but that doesn't seem like a good idea, either.]

No, not quite that. I don't remember that day. It's more like...it's the day that I got here to Luceti. A few of us that don't know our real birthdays just go off of that.

[ah. and there's that familiar smile of his.]

Well... happy birthday then, Roxas. I wish I had known earlier; I would have gotten you a present in time.

This is present enough. Last year you and me didn't really spend enough time together on days like this.

Really? How come?

...you and I weren't exactly good friends like we are now when you were here before. I mean we got along and stuff, but you spent a lot of time with Kairi. It makes sense though, I'm not mad or anything.

[... spent a lot of time with Kairi. why does this subject sound along the lines of when Axel was teasing him earlier? now Sora's just curious.]

Roxas, what all did I do last time I was here?

Do you want the long story, or the short version? [He sounds as though he's been waiting a while to explain all of it.] I've got plenty of ice cream and just as much time.

If you want to tell the whole story, I'm willing to listen.

[he's glad, actually. the more detail the better.]

Okay, let's see. [He's going to take a moment to chew on his ice cream stick before he starts ticking off numbers with his fingers.] The first time you were around, we barely saw you at all. You kept going off on your own and disappearing. The second time you were only here for a little while, but you spent a lot of time with Riku and Kairi. I...didn't really get to know you that well, and I did some stuff I'm not proud of now that I think about it, but it's in the past so it doesn't matter. [Namely he tricked the other Sora into letting him merge with him and hide out for a while.]

The third time, the time before you came back this time? You were here forever...you were part of the Blue Rogues and doing all kinds of hero stuff, rallying the teams with morale and stuff. You were close with Riku still but you were even closer with Kairi. Like...really close. She's that girl that you like, right? You guys were...kind of together for over a year. [It's just that nobody told you.] You spent a lot of time with her. You were even starting to be good friends with Axel despite everything. Xion and I were kind of uncertain about you though...

And now you're here. And everything's changed again, but I think we all like you more now. Riku seems happier at least. So does Xion.

Okay so maybe that's not as detailed as it could be, but you get the idea, right?

[Sora... just outright stares at Roxas for several long, agonizing minutes. most of what Roxas described seems to make enough sense, but... him and Kairi? really? for that long?]

[and then Sora turns vaguely pink.]

[and then he shakes his head, tries to shake it off. no, he can't think too long on it, he can't... Kairi's happiness is more important, no matter what. always. that crush will be there for a long time, if not forever, but at this point, Sora knows better than to act on it.]

[he nods after a minute, his expression finally clearing up. peaceful.]

Yeah. Yeah, I'm getting a pretty good picture.

...so what's that look for? [Nothing gets past your not-twin, dude. Just accept it.]

[NO YOU CAN'T READ MY POKER FACE.]

Nothing. That just kinda surprised me, I guess. [see? poker. face.]

...yeah, okay. I'd be kind of surprised too. [Roxas can't read anything :|] So what else do you want to know about it all?

... Um. [an awkward shift.]

I guess I'm just glad that we're friends now, really.

Well...it was bound to happen eventually. I'm sort of you. It'd be like hating part of yourself.

[...Roxas shut up.] I mean I'm glad we're friends now too, but you know what I mean. It's still...[He just makes a vague gesture.]

... Y'know, I like to think that we'd be friends, even if we weren't a part of each other.

Yeah? Why is that? [Not that he disagrees, but he's curious if it's for the same reasons.]

It's just a feeling I have, is all. I mean-- it'd be the same way if we didn't know about it, right?

...yeah. You and I are just similar no matter what. It's like...we've gone through the same things and you just get it. Most of the time. It's nice.

Yeah, it is. We both kind wound up fighting without having any say in it, huh?

Everybody keeps using us. It'll be nice when we can go back to the islands and not worry about any of it.

Mm. It's been long enough that I feel like I've forgotten what it's like.
